What We Do

Kontemporary is an independent art review platform dedicated to serious, accessible criticism across painting, sculpture, photography, installation, and performance. We believe great art writing opens works rather than closes them — sharpening the eye, deepening the encounter, and placing practice inside the broader cultural conversation it belongs to.

01

Exhibition Reviews

Timely, considered reviews of gallery and museum shows — written by critics who stand in front of the work, not behind a press release. We cover major institutions and overlooked independents equally.

02

Artist Profiles

Long-form encounters with working artists — in their studios, across their bodies of work, and through the questions that drive their practice. We prioritise depth over access.

03

Visual Essays

Image-led features that use photography, archival material, and editorial design as critical tools — not illustration. The work speaks; the text listens.

04

Critical Essays

Longer-form thinking on movements, markets, theory, and the contested histories that shape what art means today. Opinion with an argument — not a take.

05

Art Fair Dispatches

On-the-ground coverage from Art Basel, Frieze, Venice, and beyond — filtering signal from noise so readers understand what actually matters on the fair floor.

06

Collecting Guides

Honest, practical guidance for new and experienced collectors — free of gallery influence, written by critics who buy art themselves and understand what the relationship really costs.

Who We Are

Writing about art with
honesty and care

Kontemporary was founded by a group of critics, curators, and artists who felt that art writing had drifted too far from its purpose — too deferential to galleries, too enamoured with the market, too reluctant to say what it actually thinks.

We publish criticism that takes the work seriously — its materials, its context, its place in art history, and its relationship to the world outside the gallery walls. We are independent of commercial galleries, auction houses, and collector interests.

  • Editorially independent — no gallery advertising, no sponsored content, ever.
  • Critically honest — we publish negative reviews when the work warrants it.
  • Globally minded — covering practices beyond the usual Western art-world centres.
